The Prismatic Recaster at first seems very complicated. I will try to explain as simple as possible how it works. If by chance, you have not unlocked the Prismatic Recaster or the Umbral Decoder, it’s because you have not progressed through the quest for the Drifter, which starts with taking the Seed of Silver to the invasion site which you get after completing the initial story quest at the start of Season of Arrivals. (Before I go any further, I should mention that some of this stuff requires the purchase of the season pass. Reaching level 2 of the season pass to get the Twisted Energy may also be required)

Short version of how the Prismatic Recaster work

So basically you will use this Prismatic Recaster to turn your Umbral Engrams into better Umbral Engrams; giving you a little more control of what you actually get from your Umbral Engram.

More detailed version of how the Prismatic Recaster work

At some point during that quest line (after the part that asks you to do a strike, crucible, or gambit match) you will speak with the Drifter and he will turn your attention over to the Prismatic Recaster.

You will need to level up the Recaster by depositing Twisted Energy, which you can get from bounties in the Prismatic Recaster and as rewards in the Season Pass.

Gifts of Light and Dark

Once you level it up, you will see the Umbral Affinity category. Go into the “gifts of light and dark” vendor subscreen. You should be able to unlock the first gift of the first rank which will unlock basic Umbral Focusing.

Each time you level up the Prismatic Recaster, you unlock the ability to claim a gift. You must claim all the gifts in Rank 1 before you can get the gifts in the other ranks and each gift has a description of what perk you get.

Umbral Focusing

Here’s the part where you turn your Umbral Engrams into better Umbral Engrams. There are 3 categories:

  • Basic Umbral Focusing
  • Improved Arsenal Focusing
  • Improved Armor Focusing

Each engram icon has a description that will tell you what you will get from that engram and the required materials. For example the Pyramid-Focused Umbral Engram gave me a Darkness weapon called False Promises.

Improved Arsenal Focusing will give you a weapon. Which weapon that is is stated in the description of the engram.

Improved Armor Focusing does the same as Improved Arsenal Focusing except it gives you armor. As of right now, I am unsure of what armor you will get but it does describe the stats of whatever that armor is.

The improved Arsenal Focusing and the Improved Armor Focusing is unlocked by reaching the required level in the Season of Arrivals Season Pass.

The free weekly focuses text to the right of the Basic Umbral Focusing category probably means that this (if not all) category will switch weekly. I purchased the Pyramid-Focused Umbral Engram en and got the False Promises both times. So either I just received the same weapon twice or this weapon is the same for the rest of the week, assuming that it does change.

Update: you can get the other darkness weapons from the Pyramid-Focused Umbral Engram.

The rest of the categories are straight forward. Completing the bounties will give you materials you need for the Umbral Focusing. Leveling up the Prismatic Recaster will reward things like weapons and materials as well. As for the rewards at the bottom, you’ll gain access to those as you level up the Prismatic Recaster. Each displays the materials you need to purchase the item.
