I found very quickly that Arch-Tempered Velkhana isn’t a push-over in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. I thought that after fighting Fatalis, Velkhana would be easy since Fatalis was such a difficult fight.
But like with all monsters, once you make the proper adjustments and get familiar with the fight you will be on your way to victory soon. Arch-Tempered Velkhana is no exception. So here are some tips to defeat Arch-Tempered Velkhana.
Armor Skills
Velkana is weak to fire so bring a fire weapon. Make sure you have at lease 20 ice elemental resistance so you don’t need to worry about ice blight. If you can, make an armor build that naturally resist ice. And make sure your defense is at lease around 1050+.
The armor skills I recommend are Guts (2 piece Kulve Taroth) or eat for Moxie at the Canteen, Quick Sheath level 3 and Divine Blessing (level 5 if possible). In my experience, some of Velkhana’s ice attacks seem to one-shot even with high elemental resistance (probably when it’s angered). Guts and Divine Blessing can act as a safety net for that. Quick Sheath will give you more time to react to attacks that you need to hard evade.
Canteen
Things I would recommend eating for are elemental resistance, Safeguard, Insurance (if available) and Moxie (if you don’t have guts). Safeguard and Insurance of course allows for more carts before failing the mission. Moxie allows you to survive a hit that would kill you.
Learning the Fight
Once you have your build set up it’s just a matter of learning the fight. Once you study AT Velkhana attack patterns, you will learn where the openings are and what attacks you seriously need to dodge. For example Velkhana has attacks that will open it up to an easy clutch claw attack if you can get the timing and positioning correct when you identify that it’s coming.
Here’s a video showing how to identify and counter some of its attacks:
Be careful, if AT Velkhana runs while you are latched on to it, you will be thrown down to the ground and stuck there for a few seconds unable to move. (May only happen when wearing Temporal mantle).
I think the biggest issue with AT Velkhana is the time. You only have 30 minutes. A lot of people if they had at least 5 more minutes to fight would not have as much trouble defeating it.
