All Black Dragons in Monster Hunter

Black dragons in the world of Monster Hunter (and I believe in the gaming world in general) are sacred, powerful dragons with very destructive powers and the ability to wipe out everything in their vicinity. As far as wiping out everything in their vicinity, the black dragons in Monster Hunter are known for doing just that. There are very few in Monster Hunter.

They are at the top of the chain in terms of power in the Monster Hunter universe, but I believe that “god dragons” may also be a thing since dragons of creation and Safi’Jiiva exist in Monster Hunter World. If so, how they compare to black dragons in terms of power is yet to be determined but that’s a topic for another day.

All Black Dragons

Fatalis

Fatalis is the quintessential black dragon and is the main black dragon of Monster Hunter. A fan favorite. It has a very long neck and tail with wings.

Fatalis has a strong hate for humans. Back in ancient times, human civilization lived with the dragons. Human civilization became very technologically advanced, creating very powerful tools and towers. They, however, took things too far and begin killing the dragons and using their materials to build their towers and weapons.

They then created something called the Wyvern Machine Soldier. It was a living creature that they created by killing dragons and it was a weapon that was as powerful as the dragons themselves. They had to kill 30 dragons to create this weapon. They discovered they can kill even more dragons to expand its life cycle.

The dragons did not like this. There was on in particular who held the most hatred for humanity and it’s machine soldiers, Fatalis. It did not like how humanity would have the audacity to try to match the power of the dragons.

Fatalis is known for wiping out the powerful Kingdom of Schrade and thus the ancient civilization. There are also the Crimson Fatalis and the White Fatalis. It is said that the White Fatalis may be the same Fatalis that wiped out the Kingdom of Schrade, just aged with new powers.

(Note: Crimson Fatalis and White Fatalis don’t have “black dragon” in their title but I believe they are still considered black dragons)

Dire Miralis

This dragon is known as the smelting black dragon. It’s a dragon that is so hot it requiers it’s own sea to regulate the heat. But it wiped out all the life forms in that sea and turned it red with blood.

It is said that after it is killed, the heart continues to beat and that it can regenerate from just that. It’s is thought to be immortal, and that like Crimson and White, it may actually be an incarnation of Fatalis.

Alatreon

If you’ve played Monster Hunter World, you’ve run into this dragon. It is a Black dragon that is said to control all elements but in an unstable way.

It wipes out all life forms in the area that it lives (including plants) and makes the area inhabitable due to the fact that the weather is always changing. It is believed that Alatreon may have been a god or demon that transformed into an Elder Dragon.

Please note that there are other dragons (like Safi’Jiiva, Disufiroa, etc) that are in the same class as or are close to in terms of power to a black dragon. However, they are not confirmed anywhere to be an actual “black dragon” so I did not add them to this list.

These are the only dragons that are called "black dragons". You may be referring to others that can go in the black dragon tier but are not officially called black dragons.
