Whenever Bungie makes sandbox changes to PvP, the first thing we look for is a meta shift. Shotguns (and a few other weapons) got hit in update 3.2.1. After watching well knowledgeable PvP analysts and hopping into the Crucible myself, we now know where the meta shift went (for now).
One weapon in particular with a few weapon archetypes seem to have taken over. However, the case may be that even though we “may” have some standouts, overall PvP may be on the more balanced side. Meaning that a lot of other weapons can be used now. You can use it without feeling like a certain other gun or weapon archetype overpowers you.
So, which weapon/archetypes is it?
Lord of Wolves
I watched some players go into private matches and play around with the different kill ranges of shotguns. They even tested the kill potential with different resilience (6 resilience may be the sweet spot now). It appears that you will need to two-shot with shotguns in most cases.
On average the kill range for shotguns is about seven meters. Lord of Wolves, however, is sitting at 11 meters. Since the name of the game inside the Crucible is to quickly obliterate your opponent from as far back as possible, that puts the Lord of Wolves in a very nice spot.
Even if you don’t kill with that first shot with Lord, the fire rate is so high that that follow-up shot is almost instantaneous. We’re basically talking about a rapid-fire pulse rifle shotgun that can murder you at a good range. So if you see a Crucible full of flaming shotguns, that’s why. But what I will talk about next may be the reason you don’t see that.
Slug Shotguns
As I mentioned, the name of the game is to kill from far back. Slugs still have their range. So this puts them in that sweet spot too.
Lord of Wolves is an exotic weapon. Players may want to use another weapon as an exotic. Therefore, as far as options go, slugs are looking pretty tempting.
Grenade Launchers
Slugs aren’t the only thing that’s a tempting offer. Grenade Launchers are good too. Between slugs and launchers, it really boils down to personal preference. Both can kill at far ranges. Of course, grenade Launchers kill further than slugs if you can hit that shot.
Personally, I want to wait for things to settle a bit more. But as of right now, that’s where we are at. But like I said before, other weapon types may be good now too. PvP may be on more of a balanced playing field. We may see a rise in snipers and fusions.
I will have updates later if there’s a meta shift. Check out the Destiny 2 category for all the information on Destiny 2. Feel free to follow Hallowpeak Gaming on Facebook and Twitter if you would like to get notified of posts I make in the future.
