Home Decorating Guide for Starfield
So, you’ve reached that phase of your Starfield journey where you’re ready to invest several hours into decorating your home. Like many aspects of the game, it might seem a bit perplexing at first. But once you unravel its functions, it becomes simple.
I assume by now that you already have a home. Either you began the game with a home (like I did) by selecting the “Dream Home” background as you were creating your character. Or by buying a home in one of the major cities.
As you progress through the game, be sure to pick up any items you would like to place in your home. There are items that are part of a collection. Plushies, board games, earth items, etc can be collected and placed on shelves, tables, and displays.
Skills you will want
The first thing to know, you need to upgrade the right skills to improve your home decorating. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t tell you that to improve your home decorating, you need to upgrade the Outpost Engineering skill. This will also allow you to improve and increase the type and amount of furniture you can craft in your home. This is done at a Research Lab station.
Research Lab
At the Research Laboratory station, go to Outpost Development. Then, go to Decoration 1. Make sure you have enough of the required materials. Once you have all the materials, the research project will be completed.
You’ll have upgraded your decorating and Decoration 2 will open. Repeat the process for Decoration 2 but you must have first upgraded your Outpost Engineering skill.
Now on to decorating
A device on the wall of your home takes you into build mode. Highlight the item you want to build.
If there’s a number under the icon of the item you want to build, then that item has several variations. Click left and right to cycle through them.
Storage
You’ll need materials to build the various items and a place to hold those items. Make a few of the large storage crates. They hold a mass of 150 each. Unfortunately, you have to have the items on you to build.
*Note: I previously thought the storage in your room connects to your home, but that’s not the case. Your ship storage also doesn’t connect to your home*.
Placing items
If you want to place any cool items you’ve collected during your journey, bring them to your home and drop them on the floor. You can then move it while in build mode.
If you want to set something inside a display case, first build a display case. Keep the item in your inventory. Then leave build mode and interact with the display case. It will act as if you’re storing something inside.
And that’s it. Decorate to your heart’s desire. The last thing to note is that quests have more items you receive as rewards you can use for decorating.
