Around the time this article was written, year one of Destiny was towards the end of its cycle with the release of Rise of Iron and now everyone is talking about Destiny 2. The majority of the team at Bungie has just started their work on Destiny 2. I guess you can say that this article will become sort of time capsule because it will be interesting reading these years into the future when Destiny 2 has concluded and everyone is talking about Destiny 3 release date. This post will also be like a thread for Destiny 3 information and updates.
The question that people are probably not even thinking about at this time is will there be a Destiny 3? I can answer that by saying yes, there will be a Destiny 3. No I am not a time traveler but I can give several reasons why I know that Destiny 3 will happen.
To start, lets look at all that has happened since Destiny release date on September 9, 2014. Year One of Destiny featured two small expansions, The Dark Below in December 2014 and House of Wolves in May 2015. Here we learned of Crota, Eris Morn and got a chance to learn about the Reef.
The Taken King, was released in September 2015 and marked the beginning of Year Two. Here we learned about Oryx and got a chance to explore different locations through the galaxy. We also got a chance to get to know more of the other characters like Cayde.
Lastly, Rise of Iron was released in September 2016, beginning Year 3. Here we got a chance to see the guy who has been hosting the Iron Banner events all this time. We climbed Felwinter’s Peak and learned that there are other great Iron Lords. We soon realized that the fallen has been busy all this time playing around with SIVA.
So with all this that has happened in the first 3 years, we barely scratched the surface of whats going on in the Destiny universe. Destiny 2 will surely progress the story, but if we assume that the same amount of content will be released as expansions for Destiny 2 then that means that there will still be much more story left after Destiny 2 have come and gone.
It will be helpful to note that this is the first game in a ten-year agreement between Bungie and Activision. At first, it was believed that Bungie promised that this game will go on for 10 years. Later on, there was speculation that Bungie did not promise this. But this is all speculation so we will see as the years go on.
Destiny 3 release date probably will be sometime in 2020.
———UPDATE (May 22nd 2017)———
At this time, Destiny 2 has not even been released and there are already been rumors that Bungie has the story for Destiny three finished already. Right now I speculate that Destiny 3 Release Date will be in September of 2020.
———UPDATE (January 4th 2018)——
If you played Destiny 2 then you have seen the end cinematic. We speculate that Destiny 3 will start off with these Dark triangular ships in the image above.
—– UPDATE (October 21, 2018) —–
This image has been posted by Anonthenine. He is a person that has leaked information about Destiny 2 Forsaken and has been 100 percent accurate (leaked the new subclasses). This is why a lot of people hold his leaks to be true.
This is the Icy Moon Europa, which is a moon of Jupiter. People was wondering when this will release and if it would be a dlc for Destiny 2. Anonthenine commented and said D3 (Destiny 3).
So why is Europa significant? Well there is actually a lot of information on this place in the lore, even dating back in Destiny 1. Bungie themselves even shown us the image we see above.
There was a colony there during the golden age but was lost during the Collapse.
Whats interesting here is that this is a Jovian moon Which the nine are the enigmatic rulers of the “Jovians”, which are a human like race. Xur is one of them. Osiris is said to have met with the Nine on Europa, and before his exile had an obsessive interest in them to the exclusion of his duties as the Warlock Vanguard.
Dark Subclasses in Destiny 3
Aside from this there is also speculation of Guardians using the darkness as weapons. This was actually something that was speculated before we received the new subclasses for Destiny 2 (Arcstrider, Sentinel, Dawnblade). The triangular ships we see is speculated to be the darkness, which we probably won’t see till Destiny 3. So us using dark powers in D3 lines up with the darkness coming in Destiny 3.
—– Update (April 5, 2019)——-
Destiny 3 Locations
Venus and Old Chicago are rumored to also be locations in Destiny 3. The triangle ships are stated to be endgame locations similar to the Dreaming City.
New enemy faction, the Veil, in Destiny 3
There’s a new race called the Veil. They are expected to come with the dark triangular ships and are said to serve the darkness just like how the guardians serve the light. So they will be just as powerful. The story on them is that during the collapse, their god of darkness was defeated and now they are trying to use the traveler to bring him back.
UPDATE (6/12/2020): There are strong indications that Destiny 3 will never happen and that Destiny 2 will be a on-going thing. This was picked up during an interview Dr. Lupo had with Luke Smith discussing the future of Destiny 2. You can see it here
