Destiny Cosmodrome. The very first place you touchdown at the start of your journey throughout Destiny. The very first time you’ve met your ghost and the first time you’ve experienced the darkness that overshadows the land.
You’ve went from humble beginnings to slaughtering SIVA fallen throughout the Plaguelands, killing hive-kings like Oryx and slaying a massive Vex Minotaur who has powerful control over time in the Vault of Glass .
Now we are in the Rise of Iron and if you’ve done the quest to get the Khvostov 7G-0X, you know that the ending to that quest gets a little emotional (I won’t say why for spoiler reasons). But this got me thinking a lot about the Cosmodrome so I did some digging and found out some interesting things.
Here are some things that you may not know about the Cosmodrome:
Destiny Cosmodrome
The Cosmodrome is actually a real-world location in Kazakhstan. Bungie artists stated that they chose the Baikonur cosmodrome as the game’s starting point for its history in the evolution of spaceflight. The Cosmodrome that we see may or may not look exactly like the real world location geographically but it does take after the location.
This location is somewhere in or around Russia. This is significant because by now you may have noticed some Russian elements in the game like Rasputin, who speaks in a Russian language and the Khvostov; which is a Russian name for that exotic auto rifle.

I’m sure you’ve seen this logo throughout your journey throughout Destiny Cosmodrome. This is actually a logo and its actually an acronym for The Russian Federal Bureau of Aeronautics. This company is responsible for the building of the Cosmodrome. They also are the same company that created the Khvostov 7G-0X and Shinobu’s Vow.
Those parked destroyed cars outside the Cosmodrome?
Those cars are actually whats left of the event that took place after the Golden Age. Those were cars of people trying to get into the Cosmodrome when the darkness came. It is unclear what exactly happened around that time but what we do know is that your Guardian died around that area. That’s right, you were actually dead before your ghost brought you back to life.
Here’s a source from the Grimoire on Bungie.net
It is not really clear why the ghost was looking for you specifically. I speculate that you were some type of defender who died trying to help people get into the city. If you remember the first time the ghost revived you he said, “You’ve been dead a long time so you’re gonna see a lot of things you won’t understand”. This tells me that you actually do have some type of memory of your previous self.
The colony ship that stands as the centerpiece of Destiny Cosmodrome was one of the last ships attempting to escape the Darkness, but failed to launch due to a fuel line explosion.
