At the end of the main storyline for Monster Hunter World, we had to fight a large, blue, bioluminescent monster named Xenojiiva. In Iceborne we found ourselves with a similar style of fight, except this time it’s Shara Ishvalda or the Old Everwyrm as it was called several times in the story.
This fight will be difficult on your first few tries, but once you figure out information about the monster and the surroundings it becomes manageable. Still challenging, but manageable. So, here’s a guide on how to defeat Shara Ishvalda or the Old Everwyrm and Ill also include some gameplay footage.
Shara Ishvalda
The fight starts out with the monster covered in a rock armor. You must damage it to make it shed the rock armor and then damage it enough afterward to defeat it.
The rock armor phase
The rock armor fight is not too difficult, but your objective here is to get it to the armor shedding phase as quickly as possible because you are being timed and you want a good amount of time for after it sheds its armor since that will be the more difficult part. The monster movements during this phase are slow and attacks are somewhat easy to dodge. With good armor, if you do get hit it won’t take much health.
The environment here is something you want to pay attention to.
Rock armor shed phase
This phase is where things start to get heated. At the end of the day, it just comes down to learning the attack patterns and moving accordingly. The most
The first wing beam attack is one where its bring its wings together in front of it to shoot a single forward beam attack across the room. Just move to the left or right and you’ll be fine.
Next, it shoots beams from its wings in a scattered pattern. These beams start close to its body and sweep outward.
The next one is the same, except it start outward and sweep inward. This one you may get hit by more because you may not expect it to hit you when it sweep close to the monster body.
The last is another scattered beam attack, but it is stationary and doesn’t move in or out.
It’s body posture will tell you which one it will do so look out for it.
Lastly is its spirit bomb looking ultimate attack.
It usually does this attack during the phase where it is creating ground tremors all over the place. Avoid those by the way because you won’t be able to move and it feels like you’re stuck in quicksand. It will keep you still and allow the Everwyrm to hit you with one of its attacks.
It will dig under the ground, move to a different area and resurface. Then it will throw a giant wind ball in the middle of the state and that ball will explode. To avoid this, just make sure you are at the edges of the stage.
Shara Ishvalda Weakness
For me, figuring out that the Old Everwyrm weakness is Ice was the turning point for me to defeat it. It is also weak to water but not as much as Ice. As far as the Ailments go,
The weak spots are on the head (mainly for gunners), back and chest. Don’t forget to use the clutch claw (safely) to create weak spots.
The Enviorment
There are a few things to note about the environment. First, there is an area on the walls that will drop rocks down on its head if you use your clutch claw to send it
Next, once you do enough damage to the Everwyrm when it’s in its rock armor stage, the walls will change and you will be able to run up and do wall attacks. Once you do enough damage to make it shed its rock armor, it will blast the walls away and stone piles can be found on the ground for slinger ammo.
Last tips
Skills I would recommend are health boost (2 or 3), Ice attack and if you can squeeze a fortitude jewel in there it will be good for extra protections and attack power if you get carted. Also, I believe there is a skill that will counter its ground-shaking quicksand-like technique. I just didn’t use it.
I also used the agitator skill so I will know when the monster is mad. You can’t direct a monster into a wall when it’s angry. When agitator wears off, the monster is no longer angry.
