Mothkeeper’s Wraps Hunter Build With Whirling Maelstrom and Ex Diris

Today in the mysterious world of Hallowpeak, we are talking about a Hunter build of nightmares.

In the last few seasons, I felt as though Hunters received the short end of the stick in terms of the new exotics and Aspects Bungie added to the game. This season, however, Hunters are “eating good”. Along with the new exotic weapon, Hunters received an exotic armor piece that synergizes with it.

On top of that, they received a crazy new Strand Aspect, “Whirling Maelstrom”, which is a game changer. First I’ll explain what each does. Then I’ll explain how the exotic weapon and armor synergize. After that, I’ll get into the build.

Mothkeeper’s Wraps

Mothkeeper's Wraps Hunter Build

Mothkeeper’s Wraps is an exotic that changes your grenade ability. Instead of your normal grenade, you throw a cage of 2 moths (the same moths from the Lightbearer Hive in Witch Queen). Those moths do one of 2 things:

  • Fly to you or an ally and give you and/or your teammate a Void overshield (purple Void moth)
  • Fly to an enemy and explode (blue Arc moth)

Your surroundings determine which moth will fly out. For example, if you throw it close to you and there are no allies or enemies in your immediate area, 2 Void moths will fly out and give you an overshield (one moth= 50% overshield. Two= 100%). If you shoot it far away from you towards allies or enemies, two Arc moths (or Void moths) will fly out and explode if there are only enemies in the area (or give overshield if only allies). If both allies and enemies are in the area (including you) one Void moth will go to an ally (or you) and one Arc moth will go to an enemy. This gives Hunters healing capabilities and protection for his/her teammates.

Ex Diris

This is where the synergizing magic happens. Ex Diris is an odd-looking grenade launcher that shoots a projectile different from normal grenade launchers. Furthermore, if you get a final blow with this weapon, an Arc moth flies out and attacks enemies similar to Mothkeeper’s Wraps. However, it only spawns one moth. It also draws ammo from reserves so you’ll never need to reload.

How they synergize

If you are wearing Mothkeeper’s Wraps, it spawns two moths on final blows and they act exactly the same as the moths from Mothkeeper’s Wraps. So if you go on a rampage with this exotic combination, you’ll have a consistent flow of Arc explosions and overshields. I should mention, however, that there is a very short moth cooldown. Moths come out frequently but not with every final blow.

Whirlwind Maelstrom

This is the new Hunter Aspect for the Strand subclass and a key part of this build. Any tangle you destroy spins in a vortex and seeks out enemies. When it reaches an enemy, it damages them in a consistent tick of damage.

You probably see by now how this build will operate. Not only do you have moths seeking enemies and destroying them, but you also have Tangles seeking enemies and destroying them. I also have Threadlings on this build too.

You’re basically sending your minions out to destroy enemies the whole time while taking advantage of the build’s defensive capabilities. Take a look at how this will look in this gameplay.

The Mothkeeper’s Wraps Hunter Build

This build is all about getting those moths, Tangles, and Threadlings out. So that means Fragments that aid grenade and melee recharge as well as Fragments, weapons, and Aspects that spawn and aid Threadlings. Threaded Specter and Void overshields from moths will give you defensive capabilities (Threadling spawn capabilities from Threaded Specter as well).

I chose Strand weapons with the Hatchling perk for more Threadling spawning. My armor stat spread is still a work in progress but Mobility and Discipline are the priority for class ability regeneration and grenade regeneration (class ability will aid with melee cooldown. Melee allows us to create Tangles). If you want more Tangle-creating capability, just swap out Thread of Ascent.

Update

After several changes and testing, I find that the following changes that I’ve made to this build are the best. The damage and crowd control capabilities of this build are insane. And I managed to build a triple 100 stat build.

Threads of Ascent lets me rapidly fire a rocket launcher, which results in an increase in DPS. Thread of Binding allows me to get the Resilience I need for the triple 100. However, if I ever find a way to swap it out I will. I’d love to have Thread of Rebirth on this build for the chance to spawn two Threadlings on a precision kill.

Thread of Isolation is good for reducing enemy damage and as an alternative way to spawn Tangles. Again, these Tangles are now a key part of this build. Having Whirlwind Maelstrom Tangles ripping through crowds of enemies allows you that insane crowd control.

Thread of Generation is for increasing that grenade uptime. As your Tangles and Threadlings are ripping through crowds, you can throw overshields on yourself while sending arc moths out to join your Tangles and Threadlings. Not to mention using Ex Diris for more overshields and arc moths.

Lastly, you don’t have to use Strand

If you want, you can use other subclasses. The exotic weapon and armor combo works with Arc and Void subclasses too. The Arc moth will Jolt enemies in addition to blinding them if you equip that specific Fragment and for the Void subclass, there is a Fragment that will increase the duration of your Void overshield.
