IGN Gives In-Depth Explanation on Why Starfield’s 30fps Decision Might Make Sense
These days if a game developer announces that their major game is 30fps, it’s almost dead on arrival. I speculate that that comes from the PS5 and Xbox Series X releases. Gamers want 60fps games with these powerful consoles they purchased.
So why Starfield 30fps?
Some games, however, have good reasons to be 30fps. That’s the case with Starfield. Their decision to lock Starfield at 30fps on consoles most likely comes due to several behind the scene reasons.
But gamers don’t get to see those behind the scene reasons. Nor do many fully understand game development. Michael Thompson, a hardware & software tech analyst, shined some light on the bells and whistles of game development during his video on IGN’s YouTube page.

During the video, he highlights some techniques used to develop Starfield. Then explains the level of strain it would put on your PC or console. He showed the performance of other Bethesda games like Skyrim to give you a better understanding.
I believe people should give it a watch. The trade-off may be worth it for what we’re actually getting inside Starfield. And Todd Howard said that they don’t want to sacrifice any of it.
Again, I believe they’re making the right call here. The game is massive. And if you’ve played a Bethesda game before, you’re familiar with the type of stuff they like to do with their games.
If they decided to go with 60 FPS on consoles, there will probably be a different set of issues that we would complain about.
Starfield’s release date is September 6, 2023. I will need to clone myself because Cyberpunk 2077 also releases in September. I plan to have Starfield content when it releases. Consider subscribing to get notifications on new posts!
