We’ve had our shares of “Destiny Killer” games over the years. Games that were supposed to stop people from playing Destiny and move on to another game. To me, the fact that people were looking for another game to shut down Destiny is a statement of how good of a game it is.
I believe players just wanted something else to become addicted to. That’s why they had high hopes for games like Anthem, Outriders, and Division. But to dethrone Destiny, it’s going to take a lot.
We could talk about the other games and where they went wrong, but we don’t have to. We can look at Destiny itself. All the stuff it’s made up of that makes it a tough game to “kill”.
It’s a live service game
I think as players we underestimate the amount of work it takes to run a live service game. A lot of constant maintenance. Other developers underestimate how much work it takes.
The story is great
The story (especially in the early days) did a good job of making us want to know “what happened, and what’s going to happen next?”. There was (and still is) a lot of mystery surrounding the Traveler and we always had a sense of a greater threat on the way.
The Lore is deep and facinating
I don’t even know where to start to try to explain the lore of Destiny. It’s crazy. There’s so much you can read on.
Everything from what happened between Shin Malphur and Dredgen Yor, to the history of the Hive and how they’re billions of years old. We learned about the Deep Stone Crypt before it became a raid, but could only imagine what type of place it was in our minds.
Then Bungie would add weapons and armor pieces from the lore. Like how the Gjallarhorn was created by Feizel Crux as a gift to the Guardians who fought the Battle of the Twilight Gap. It was forged from the armor of the Guardians who fell in battle.
People will remember the “Destiny Experience”
This game has been a part of me and everyone who has been here for the journey since the beginning. We all remember how it felt going through the Dreadnaught. Solving the mysteries within when the Taken King expansion came out. We remember the late-night raids. The legendary loot cave.
For a lot of us, we have truly been a part of this world. One day this game will stop being supported by Bungie and the reality of how much this game meant to everyone will set in.
The loot
This game has one of the best loot and loot systems that I’ve seen in a game. The variety and functions are wild. I still remember grinding for hours trying to get that Husk of the Pit. I still remember everyone rockin’ the Ice Breaker sniper rifle for the Crota’s End raid.
Conclusion
Now don’t get me wrong. Everything wasn’t always perfect. Over the years it took a lot of community feedback to drive the game in the right direction. But these are “some” of the reasons why “Destiny killer” games never succeeded.
I didn’t even talk about PvP. That’s a monster all on its own. However, I’d mention that Trials of Osiris had some players coming back each week just to play that alone.
I lost count on how many “Destiny killer” games have come and gone. None have succeeded and none ever will. Destiny has earned a spot in a lot of hearts and will be remembered long after it’s no longer supported.
